This is a very good question. I think the word “roar” is used, not to explain to us what a lion actually does, but rather what kind of a creature is being described. It is not just some timid cat that we may think of locked up in a cage, but rather it is a ferocious lion, out on the loose seeking whom it may devour. Again, I think the word “roar” is being used to describe what a fierce creature is being mentioned of in I Peter 5:8, and not what it actually does. Now, to explain the relationship between a lion that roars and a lion that is sneaky. It is simply this. The roaring or ferocious lion is the same kind of lion that sneaks up on its prey. The ferocity of the creature is just locked up tight inside while the stalking is in progress. The true beast is released in the seizing of its prey. This, of course, is usually too late for the prey to escape. Great question! Thanks for asking! Hoped I helped you out, and explained it clearly.

Thanks for the reminder Kyle! C. S. Lewis said that we need to be reminded more than taught. Prayer, Bible reading and attendance help us to "train the habit of faith." Daily praise accomplishes this as well. In praising God, I praise and acknowledge Him; I adore Him. In doing so, I am also reminded of His greatness, love, kindness, mercy, and provision. I am reminded of my need, my inadequacy. I am reminded of what I believe and why I believe. My faith is reinforced-fed and nourished. Yes, praise to our God is something that should be on our minds and in our hearts daily. Certainly, He is worthy.

I think you're correct in stating that God reached out to you through preaching. That is the only way that He has granted repentance to us. I take it that the gospel is the "compelling influence" of which you speak, of which I agree. I pray that you can continue standing for truth and trying to help better people's understanding of the New Testament.

I found your blog through this post. I had just written the same things in a conversation with someone:

God can "give repentance" by (1) allowing the opportunity of repentance and (2) providing a compelling influence to repent. God cannot "give repentance" by forcing someone to change their mind, for their change of mind would have no moral quality, being forced. God also cannot grant repentance by enabling someone to repent who was unable all along to do so, for their previous state of mind would've had no (bad) moral quality from which to turn. ... I am not responsible for the fact that God has granted me the opportunity to repent. I am not responsible for the fact that God has reached out to me, through preaching, when I was his enemy. I did not earn these blessings by good works.

Very true. Churches do need to make sure they care for needy saints. Part of the problem is that churches believe they can help everyone with the funds they collect from their first day of the week contributions. However, the Bible does not authorize this. As long as a congregation will diligently focus on their responsibility, they can fulfill it.

I think that we have to follow this commission for sure, however in addition to this commission I believe most churches for get about the instruction to distribute to the saints in need in their own congregations( Rom 12:13, Acts 2:44), as well the opportunity in other congregations (2nd Cor 9:1-12,1cor 16:1-4). I believe we are to preach, teach , and make disciples as we go out and make sure needs are met inside of the congregation. Well what if your congregation is huge. How can you meet every need. The church in Jerusalem had over 5,000 members and every need was met. How, well they didn't waste money on image. That's right no mega ministry buildings, no advertising bills, no waste on trying to be the next great big thing. So yes I agree with the concept of go ye out, but I also believe we are suppose to make sure home is taken care of with needs being met to the least of the breathern, for they represent doing for Christ(Mathew 25:40).

Kyle it is nice to hear the truth for once. If baptism was for remission of sins before the Cross, then why wouldn't be after the Cross? It just makes sense.
